Our Ballantyne Foot Specialist Explains How To Care For a Blister

February 12, 2019

Blisters are one of the most common minor foot injuries. Whether your blister formed because you are breaking in new shoes, you forgot to wear socks, or another reason, here are some ways to care for it while it heals.

Do Not Pop it

We know—that blister just is calling to be popped. As you have probably heard, though, this will only make the problem worse. The fluid inside your blister is made of plasma, water, and platelets, or in other words, blood without the red blood cells. It’s there to act as a cushion between the injured tissue and the shoe, and to help heal it. Your body has already made a built-in blister treatment; all that’s left to do is leave it alone.

Drain it Safely

Okay, we understand—you just have to pop it. If you just can’t resist the temptation, you can at least reduce the chances of infection by draining it safely. Wash your hands with soap and hot water, and sterilize a sharp needle with rubbing alcohol. Pierce and drain the blister, and then apply an antibiotic ointment and a bandage. Check the blister regularly for signs of infection, and contact our podiatry office if you see any signs of infection (like pus, redness, or a bad smell.)

When To See a Podiatrist For a Blister

Most blisters can be prevented by wearing thick socks, tights, or nylons beneath your shoes. But if you have recurring blisters in the same spots, it may be an indication of foot deformities, like bunions. If you notice that you are repeatedly dealing with blisters in the same places, be sure to see a podiatrist for an evaluation.

Diabetics: Be Extra Careful

Please note: if you are diabetic, take extra care with blisters. Popping or draining a blister, especially an infected blister, can lead to extremely dangerous ulcers in diabetic patients.
